Introduction to Yosemite Gold Country. My name is BobBorchard and I am one of your guides through this region. For over 40-years I’ve
been living in, and, exploring Yosemite Gold Country. Though not a historian by
training, I have an interest, maybe a passion, out our California history and
the people who built this great State. My great-grand father, Christian
Borchard, was an early day pioneer in California and I was steeped, at an early
age, in the stories of life of courage, resourcefulness, and tenacity of these
early day builders of the California that we know today.
As
one of your guides, to this amazing region, I hope to make your exploration of
Yosemite Gold Country, and the Southern Mother Lode region of California, not
only fun but informative. From my years in this part of the State, I’ve learned
that our early Gold Rush pioneers played an important role, not only in the “making”
of California “the Golden State” but helped shape the Nation, as we know it.
The concept of “Manifest Destiney” of the early 1830s found its ultimate
expression in conquest of California and the formation of the Bear Flag
Republic.
The
role of the early day Mountain Men, explorers like John C. Fremont and others,
will be told in this Blog and Vlog. The trials and tribulations of our native
people, early-day Gold Seekers and the men and women who stayed on, after the easy
Gold was taken from the States streams and rivers, is the tale I plan to tell.
It
is my hope that you will find these stories and descriptions interesting and
they make your visit, or stay, in Yosemite Gold Country more meaningful.
A
little about me. I was born in Ventura County, in the southern part
of the State, during WW II into a ranch family that had pioneer roots. My family moved north, the “gold country” of
Marysville-Yuba City in the late 1950s. After a tour in the Army (Paratroop-Infantry),
I went to Cal-State Chico and took an undergraduate degree in Sociology
and Urban Studies and did graduate work in Public Administration.
I
spent forty years of my life working from small city and county governments as
a City-Regional
Planner and developed a passion for Historic Preservation. During
my planning career, I developed some skills in communication and, through the
use of modern-day telecommunications technology, I’ve found a means of “telling
the story” of our pioneer past. My 40+ plus years of living and working in Yosemite
Gold Country and the community of Mariposa, has served to help me
focus my story-telling on this region, Where History Lives. I hope you
enjoy these stories. You can find me on Facebook (Robert L. Borchard), as
well as other social media sites. I hope to hear from you.
